The price of shares of VoIP provider Vonage Holdings soared in New York last week after Vonage reported that it added over 6,000 new phone lines in its most recent quarter, its first quarterly gain in over a two years.
Vonage VoIP said its “churn” rate, the percentage of customers who cancel their services every month, dropped to 2.4 per cent during the quarter ending December, the lowest rate in over four years.
Vonage said it expects fourth quarter earnings to reach $40 million before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. The company expect to add more customers this year and believes its churn rate will remain low. Vonage says it expects revenue to grow during the second half of the year.
In recent years Vonage has lost market share to eBay Inc’s Skype service. However the company is in the process of executing a turnaround and its recovery suggests that consumers are increasingly comfortable spending money to make phone calls using the internet, since Vonage offers low call rates for international calls.

VoIP Usage Set To Explode After Launch Of Broadband Satellite
The successful launch of Europe’s first dedicated broadband satellite by the European Space Agency could result in the number of VoIP users exploding across the continent.
The ESA’s Hylas-1 utilises the latest technology and it is hoped that the satellite will provide high speed internet access to remote locations and rural villages which previously had little or no access known as “notspots”
The satellite was built in Portsmouth and was launched from the ESA’s Kourou spaceport in French Guiana, and was placed into orbit 34 minutes after launch, with its signal being picked up in India almost immediately.
The satellite will provide broadband speeds of up to 10Mbps across the continent.
Science minister David Willets told the BBC: “Now that we’ve got this satellite access, we’ll be able to get fast broadband for the first time [in notspots].”
